Gü - an unfair advantage!

What I wanted to buy - Perle de Lait yogurt...

I'm 5 feet 5 1/2 inches (1.67 m) tall, which according to Wikipedia means that I'm 1/2 inch taller than the average American woman. Even though I'm 2 inches taller than the average French woman, I figure that I'm also about the average height here because Parisian women frequently wear heels.

So, when I came face-to-face with the new display of chocolate brownies, chocolate mousse and chocolate melting cakes where my preferred brand of yogurt used to be at the grocery store, it didn't take me too long to figure out their target market. Women!

Talk about taking advantage of the so called weaker sex. I tried to resist... I really did, but Gü (pronounced "goo" as a play on the French word for taste, "goût") got the best of me.

The next time I go grocery shopping, I'm wearing high heels and sunglasses!

What I ended up buying - Gü! It's hard to believe that a French grocery store has given some of its most valuable shelf space to an English brand.

  1. Mary Kay; would you just stop whining... If I were as tall as you I'd be happy to battle with myself against all the Güs of this world!
I know that brand from my time in England and I'd always wondered how on earth any brand with such a difficult name could be so successful - and I've noticed since the beginning of my time in France that they manage perfectly well to place their products on the 'right height'... even when you are - like me - only 1.56m (5ft2 1/2in...) tall!!!
You're spot on with your 'French pronunciation' and very early into my personal experience with Gü I wanted to know too why on earth they had chosen such an unpronounceable name (The correct pronunciation would be Gue like in 'dur').
You're such an interesting blogger; you always amaze me anew with the choice of your postings!
    Bon appétit...

    1. I didn't know about Gu until it practically leapt off the shelf and into my shopping basket last week. There I was - jet lagged, tired and wondering what had happened to my regular yogurt - when it got the best of me. (Sorry! I had to squeeze in a bit more whining ;) ) I suspect that the Gu displays are like those optical illusion paintings with eyes that follow you around a room - they probably appear to be at eye level no matter what your height is!

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one confused by the choice of name. When I was trying to describe it to a friend - all that I could remember was that there was a consonant and a vowel with an umlaut. Suddenly she said "That sounds like goo!" which makes complete sense now that I've had their gooey chocolate mousse!

    2. I'm not a dessert person; but Gü really cracks me up - they are irressitible - but funnily enough, when I mentionned your interesting blog to Hero Husband, HE (the world-wide declared 'sweetest mouth' anybody knows) had no idea who or what I was talking about.
I then realised that I obviously don't spoil him enough with Gü... :)

  2. That looks tasty! I would've gave in, too.

Speaking of sweets, tomorrow is Macaron Day! Actually, "tomorrow" is "today" in Paris, isn't it? At any rate, March 20 is Macaron Day and I believe Pierre Herme is giving out free samples. You should check it out if you can. We don't have a Pierre Herme in NYC, but pastry chef Francois Payard has started an annual Macaron Day here to coincide with the one in Paris. So that's what I'm going to be doing with my morning. :)

    1. Happy Macaron Day and many thanks for the reminder! "Paris by Mouth" compiled a handy list of all of the places where people can pick up a free macaron today. I'll have to print it and take it with me.

Enjoy your macaron in NYC. I'll be thinking of you as I "celebrate"!

  3. hmmm, interesting yogurt choice. I'm more the Greek yogurt type. Is it available in France? Less sugar and a firmer texture, sort of like creme fraiche.

Now, about Gu, man, woman, man, I would have been loading up carts to carry home. For breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner--not that I know the brand, but the temptation would have been too great. I avoid one aisle in my local market because it leads to a table of donuts, and when I see them, well, I just can't say no.

    1. Yes, there's some really good Greek yogurt. It's one of my favorites, especially with honey on top. I only recently started eating Perle de Lait because my mother-in-law's nurses kept raving about it.

Isn't it funny how we avoid certain aisles in the grocery store. That's why the Gu attack seemed so sneaky. I wasn't expecting to be confronted by temptation when I went to grab my yogurt.

  4. Yum! The petit pots au chocolat are especially good with fresh raspberries on top! I hate the name though - I never made the connection with "goût".

  5. Oh! I had some goo with fresh strawberries the other night but it sounds even better with raspberries. Thanks for the tip, Gwan!

  6. Well I never knew GU was British. I always assumed it is French. Thanks to clever marketing in the UK!.....now I wonder about Perle de Lait is it really French? ...other brands? Onken, is that really Danish? Muller? where do they come from?

Must look at labels more closely.

Nice to see you back in Paris Mary-Kay
