Forget about work - it's a snow day!

If you were expecting a regular post today, I'm sorry. There's something so magical about the first snowfall of the season, even if it happens in February, that I'm officially declaring it a snow day. So, put on your mittens, grab your warmest coat and let's go to the Luxembourg Gardens. Please click on any of the photos to enlarge.

A dad and his daughter let me take a photo of the miniature snowman that they were taking home.
Just the right size for a Parisian apartment.
And then I spied "ZC", a snowman with suicidal tendencies or a Parisian attitude.
Yes, ZC has a cigarette in his mouth - good thing he doesn't have a match to light it!
The snow didn't stop these kids from having fun on their trotinettes...
or this woman from doing her Sunday yoga practice in the park.
Palais de Luxembourg. Off limits in the snow.
Moms at work - bundling babies, little kids...
and big ones, too!
Memories of summers past...

"Yes, it's a real 'Dior for Dogs'! Where's yours, big guy?"

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Up close and personal with a lion. The frozen fountain at St. Sulpice make a good ice skating rink.

  1. Fresh snow always looks beautiful, but it takes a strong woman to go out in such terrible temperatures. Really nice photos; thanks.

    1. I was well bundled - almost couldn't bend my elbows to take photos because I wearing so many layers. But the best part was going to Cafe de Flore for a Croque Madame afterwards. A friend told me to go there for the people watching on Sunday morning and it was even better than the park!

  2. You call that snow? I know you know what real snow is. But okay, it is great to have any accumulation, I do agree. And it seems to bring out some momentary happiness for everyone--you've captured that well. I love the smiley face on the red table top, and your interpretive suicidal snowman (I'm not sure I would have thought of that) and my favorite two are the last two photos--the top one totally romantic and the last one wonderfully a fantasy.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

    1. I've received emails and phone calls saying exactly the same thing - that isn't snow! But since I wasn't expecting to see any snow at all in Paris this year, I'm happy with what we got. There was a bit more accumulation but I only got to the park around 11:30 after much of it had melted.

I'm glad that I captured the mood of the day. My mother, who is from Minnesota, always said that snow brings out the best in people. And it really does.

The suicidal snowman came to mind because I had seen something similar in The New Yorker. Everyone was snapping photos of ZC on their iphones and tweeting about him so he certainly had his moment in the spotlight...before he melted.

Shortly after telling me that I no longer know what snow is, my daughter said, "I'm happy that Joseph's back!"

And finally, I started watching Downton Abbey. Have you seen it?

  3. Great photos Mary Kay! I didn't make it to the gardens (we just did our normal run to Raspail market) so it's lovely to see how pretty they looked. Hope you enjoyed the day :)

    1. So you were one of the "crazy' people I saw running in the freezing weather!!! ;) I just hope that Sir L and you were wearing long pants and not shorts! I took a couple of pictures of people in shorts that I didn't use for the post. Brrrr. I still need to get to the Raspail market.

  6. Snow is fun ... for a while at least! You do right to enjoy it. We've been sledging and skating on our lakes, as well as doing all the worky things.
Hit minus 19 this morning which frankly is taking things a bit too far, but we might get above zero again in just over a week!
Snow coming tomorrow. I hope not too much or we might not get Caiti to Paris for Sat which would be a shame. We'll have to see.

    1. Minus 19! That really is going a bit too far. No sledging in Paris, but I could have gone ice skating on the frozen fountain in front of St. Sulpice!

I really hope that everything works out for Caiti and your trip to Paris on Saturday. It would be a real pity if you had to cancel two college visits in a row.

  7. Wow, Paris got a lot of snow! We were in Fontainebleau where there was enough snow but not enough to play in.

Sunday seemed like a romantic day to wander the quiet snowy streets of Paris. Your photos really convey this. Sorry I missed it. :)

    1. Fontainebleau must have been beautiful (and romantic!) with a bit of snow. We stayed at l'Aigle Noir in December and couldn't even see the castle from the hotel because it was so foggy. We had a really great dinner at a place that was in walking distance of the hotel. And it was so much cheaper than in Paris!

  8. Nice pictures, Mary Kay. When there is just a light sprinkling of snow liken this it is the best of both worlds. Looks pretty but doesn't cause much chaos. It is the deep dirty stuff I hate, that brings everything to a a halt. In the Uk, because we have not had snow for years, they had sold all the equipment so the authorities were just not prepared for the heavy snowfall of the past two winters. This year things are much better. People are even clearing their own driveways because they have got snow shovels. Are the Paris authorities geared up for snow? as it doesn't happen very often? Love Denise
