Tea, people watching, a souk and even a hammam at the Paris Mosque

Philippe, my son, is "home" for the summer, or perhaps it would be more correct to say that he has been exiled to Paris for 4 1/2 excruciatingly long weeks.  Since he's far from all of his friends and his exciting life in Boston, I've been trying to compensate by taking him to some cool offbeat places, like the artist squat on the Rue de Rivoli, The Smoking Museum and the North African tearoom at the Paris Mosque.

Students, locals and tourists, many with guidebooks clutched in their hands, flock to the Moorish tearoom to sip hot mint tea out of delicate glasses, eat pastries and smoke shisha from traditional waterpipes. And as the tile tables in both courtyards are usually full with customers of all ages, it's a wonderful place for people watching. Philippe and I shared complicit smiles when a daring bird dived bombed a nearby table to grab a bit of baklava and startled two women in the midst of an animated discussion. Yet all of the commotion didn't distract the man and woman seated at two separate tables who were getting acquainted over a cup of tea. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to meet fellow travelers or to start a future romance, unless you're stuck at the same table as your mother!

In addition to the tearoom, the Paris Mosque also has a restaurant serving tagines and couscous, a genuine souk selling crockery, fabrics and other objects, and a hammam.

The tearoom is open 7 days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

  1. I just found your blog. I really enjoy it. I have read all the way back to May. I have enjoyed the days and information you have written about. I was there last year just before Christmas. It was soooo cold and snowed about 5 out of 8 days. But it was so beautiful. I can't wait to see how you enjoy Christmas time.
Like you I love reading the trip advisor pages about peoples trips to Paris. The best parts I think are the trip Reports. People are so kind to share their stories and adventures so others of us can learn from them.
If you like cheese one of the tours I did and enjoyed was Paris on your plate. A women has you to her house. You get 15 different kinds of cheese, 4 glasses of wine, 1 glass of bubbly, bread, grapes and a great history lesson. As well as a nice group of people. We had a blast. And very reasonable.
Also did a Paris Walks tour all about chocolate. The girl who gave it I can't remember her name but she was Excellant. I saw her on TV a month or two later on Globe Trekkers Paris.
Anyway Thank you again for your blog. Keep up the good work.

  2. Heidi, I'm glad that you found the blog. When I first saw your name at the end of the post, I thought that you were my good friend, who is also named Heidi and who posts comments from time to time.

It's good to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Paris last December. I'm also wondering what we're going to do since it will be our first Christmas here. Any advice?

Thanks for the information about Paris on Your Plate. I'll see if they have a website or something. And I'll have to add the chocolate tour to my list of things to do. I've done quite a few of the other Paris Walks tours but not the chocolate one. I guess that I was saving the best or the tastiest for last!

  3. Mary Kay, The walk down the Champs was beautiful but the crowds wow. I dont know how you all do it everyday. And it was so snowy and wet I am glad we had some water resistant shoes. ANd dont forget to go to I think it was galeries lafayette (again bad crowds) but great decorations. I just hope you share with us all of them.
As for advice I wouldn't dare. But on trip advisor a frequesnt poster named Keurouc2 has some posts about christmas lights and locations where he took a bunch of pics and posted them for us. Find his pics i think this is the link.

  4. Dear "Other" Heidi,

I was in Paris right before Christmas some years ago and have great memories of the lights on the Champs Elysees. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures of it and the decorations at Galeries Lafayette this year.

Thanks for posting the link for Kerouac2's pictures. I always love his photo journals and remember seeing the one with the Christmas lights. If you haven't taken a look at his other photo journals at "Any Port in a Storm", please do because there are lots of greats shots of Paris!
