Are champagne flutes passé? I'm sure we got our champers served in flutes when we went to Taittinger
ReplyDeleteIf Joseph says that flutes are passé (see below), they're passé! Our champagne was served in tulip shaped glasses at Taittinger, Pommery, Moet and Chandon and our B&B. According to the Mumm Champagne app, "Champagne Protocols": "Take care, however, to choose the right glass. Those for fine wines, with a high stem and a large bowl, are perfect for capturing the specific flavour of wines such as old vintage champagnes that are full bodied and mature. Tulip-shaped glass, not as narrow as flutes but more slender than the classic wine glass, will concentrate the flavours while allowing for full effervescence."
DeleteYes, flutes are passe, as most people feel they don't allow the bouquet of the wine to come forth. I still served my champagne in coupes fashioned after Marie Antoinette's breasts but that is beside the point. And these are nice hefty pours as well. Salut!
ReplyDeleteWere coupes fashioned after Marie Antoinette's or Madame de Pompadour's (mistress of Louis XV) breasts? Stephane told me that it was MA because that's what he read in the section on champagne in Wikipedia but the Mumm app ("Champagne Protocols") and one of the guides in Reims said that it was Mme de Pompadour.
DeleteAll of the houses gave us generous amounts of champagne. One of the seasonal guides told us that she's always careful when she sees cars with license plates from a different region of France or from another country because the driver has probably been sampling champagne. Stephane was our designated driver and we made sure that we had the required breathalyzers in the car in case the police stopped us.

ReplyDeleteNow that I've had the pleasure of spending a weekend in the Champagne region, I can easily understand why this post would make someone wistful. I hope that it won't be too much longer until you're able to travel there again. We had a good time talking with a couple from Australia while drinking our champagne at Moet and Chandon. They've been traveling for 3 weeks and generously gave us some addresses of other places to visit in France.
